Our 4 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert gives you a full day inside the dunes instead of a quick stop. You cross the High Atlas, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and reach Erg Chebbi on day two. Then you spend a whole day in the desert, with nomad families, the Gnawa music of Khamlia and the old caravan town of Rissani, before returning to Marrakech through the Draa Valley.
This 4 days desert tour from Marrakech runs as a private trip. You travel only with your own group, in an air-conditioned vehicle, with the same driver-guide for four days. It follows the old caravanserai road: the route that linked Marrakech with Sijilmasa and, beyond the sand, with Timbuktu.

Why choose a private 4 days desert tour from Marrakech?
The fourth day is what changes this trip. On a three-day tour, you arrive at the dunes and leave the next morning. On this 4 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, you wake up in the desert and stay there, so you see how people actually live between the sand and the palm groves.
Because the tour is private, you also choose the pace and the comfort level. You can stay in a standard camp or in a luxury tent with a private bathroom, and you can swap an activity for a quiet morning on the dunes. If you are comparing formats, read our guide to private vs group tours in Morocco.
Itinerary of the 4 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert
The route below is our standard plan. However, we can adjust the stops, the hotels and the camp to your wishes. Driving distances and times are approximate and do not include stops.
Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley
Your driver picks you up at your riad or hotel in Marrakech at around 8:00 am. First, the road climbs into the High Atlas through Berber villages, walnut trees and red terraces. Soon, you reach the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The sign at the top reads 2,260 m, although GPS measurements place it at about 2,205 m.
Next, you descend to the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987. Caravans loaded with salt, gold and dates once stopped below these walls on the way between the Sahara and Marrakech. You can walk up through the lanes to the old granary at the top.
After lunch, you pass through Ouarzazate, home of the Atlas film studios, and follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. On the way you see the palm grove of Skoura, with the earthen Kasbah of Amridil, and the Rose Valley around Kelaat M’Gouna. Finally, you reach the Dades Valley for dinner and the night.
- Driving distance: about 350 km
- Driving time: about 6 hours 30 minutes
- Overnight: hotel or guesthouse in the Dades Valley
- Meals: dinner
Day 2: Dades Gorges – Tinghir – Todgha Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga (camel trek)
After breakfast, you drive up the Dades Gorges to see the Monkey Fingers rocks and the hairpin road that climbs the cliff. Then you continue east to Tinghir, where a viewpoint looks over a long green palm grove.
A few kilometres further, you enter the Todgha Gorge. In its narrowest section, the canyon is only about 10 m wide and the smooth walls rise around 160 m on each side. Elsewhere, the cliffs reach 400 m.
In the afternoon, the road crosses desert plains through Tinejdad and Erfoud, a town known for fossils and dates. Finally, you arrive in Merzouga and ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for the sunset. In the evening, you enjoy a Berber dinner, drums around the fire and a sky full of stars.
- Driving distance: about 320 km
- Driving time: about 5 hours 30 minutes
- Camel ride: about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to the camp
- Overnight: desert camp in Erg Chebbi (standard or luxury)
- Meals: breakfast and dinner
Day 3: Erg Chebbi – nomad families – Khamlia – Rissani and Sijilmasa – oasis
Wake up early and climb a dune for the sunrise. After breakfast, a 4×4 takes you around Erg Chebbi: the black volcanic hills, the dry lake of Dayet Srji, where flamingos stop after the rains, and the tracks used by the old caravans.
You visit a nomad family under their tent and learn how they find water and pasture. Then you stop in Khamlia, a village founded by descendants of people brought north along the trans-Saharan routes, where a Gnawa group plays its deep, repetitive rhythms.
In the afternoon, you can visit Rissani, in the Tafilalt oasis. One kilometre north of the town lie the ruins of Sijilmasa, founded in 757 and, for centuries, the northern gate of the gold and salt trade with West Africa. The rest of the day is free for tea, sandboarding or simply watching the light change on the sand.
- Driving distance: about 80 km, mostly by 4×4
- Activity time: about 4 hours, plus free time
- Overnight: desert camp or hotel near the dunes
- Meals: breakfast and dinner
Day 3 is the calm day of the 4 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert: no long drive, and you sleep in the same area.
Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Alnif – N’Kob – Agdz – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
After an early breakfast, you start the drive back to Marrakech on a different road from the way out. The route runs west through Rissani and Alnif, along the foothills of Jbel Saghro, then through N’Kob and its kasbahs.
At Tansikht you join the Draa Valley and follow it to Agdz, between palm groves and earthen villages. The Draa is the longest river in Morocco, at about 1,100 km.
Afterwards, you climb over the Tizi n’Tinififft pass to Ouarzazate. Finally, you cross the High Atlas again on the Tizi n’Tichka and arrive in Marrakech in the evening.
- Driving distance: about 560 km
- Driving time: about 9 hours
- Overnight: not included (end of the tour in Marrakech)
- Meals: breakfast
The caravanserai route: what you are actually driving
What is a caravanserai?
A caravanserai was an inn for caravans. The word comes from Persian: karwan, the caravan, and sarai, a building with an enclosed courtyard. Inside the walls there was one gate, a courtyard for the camels, storerooms for the goods and rooms upstairs for the merchants. In Morocco and the rest of the Maghreb, the same building is called a funduq or fondouk.
Sijilmasa, the caravan city near Rissani
Sijilmasa was founded in 757 in the Tafilalt oasis, about one kilometre north of today’s Rissani. By the 10th century it was the northern end of the western trans-Saharan routes: gold arrived from the south, salt went the other way, and coins were minted in the city. It was abandoned in 1393, and its ruins are still visible beside the Ziz.
Ait Ben Haddou and the road to Marrakech
Once the caravans crossed the desert, they still had to reach the imperial cities. Ait Ben Haddou guarded that road, above the Ounila valley, and the kasbahs of Skoura, Kelaat M’Gouna and Ouarzazate marked the following stages. On this 4 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, you drive that same sequence in reverse.
Khamlia and the memory of the caravans
The Gnawa families of Khamlia descend from people who came north with those caravans. Their music, with metal castanets and a three-string guembri, is the clearest living trace of the trans-Saharan trade on this route.

Frequently asked questions
Is 4 days better than 3 days for the Sahara?
Yes, if you want to see the desert and not only cross it. The 4 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert adds a full day around Erg Chebbi, with the 4×4 excursion, the nomad families, Khamlia and Rissani.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, or 9 to 10 hours of driving. That is why the tour breaks the journey with a night in the Dades Valley.
What is a caravanserai, and do we see one?
A caravanserai is a walled inn with a courtyard where caravans stopped for the night; in Morocco it is called a funduq. On this route you see their descendants: the ksour and kasbahs of Ait Ben Haddou, Skoura and the Draa Valley, and the ruins of the caravan city of Sijilmasa near Rissani.
Do we sleep two nights in the camp?
You can. Some travellers prefer one night in the camp and one in a hotel near the dunes, with a pool and a proper shower. Tell us your preference when you book.
Do the desert camps have bathrooms?
Yes. Standard camps have shared or private bathrooms, depending on the camp. Superior and luxury tents have a private bathroom with a shower.
Is the tour suitable for families with children?
Yes, and the extra day helps a lot with children, because there is only one long drive at the end. Tell us their ages when you book.
What type of vehicle do you use?
We use a private, air-conditioned vehicle adapted to the size of your group, plus a 4×4 for the desert excursion on day 3.
What should I pack for the desert?

- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat or scarf.
- Comfortable shoes or sandals for the sand.
- A small bag for the camp nights.
- A power bank and some cash in dirhams.
How far in advance should I book?
