Why choose a private Marrakech to Fes desert tour?
A private tour gives you full control of your time. For example, you can stop longer in Ait Ben Haddou, skip a shop, or add a short walk in the Dades Gorges. On a private 3 days tour from Marrakech to Fes, your driver-guide adapts the day to your group, not to a fixed bus schedule.
In addition, you pick your accommodation level. You can stay in a simple guesthouse and a standard camp, or you can choose a boutique hotel and a luxury tent with a private bathroom. Families, couples and friends travelling together usually prefer this format. If you are still comparing formats, read our guide to private vs group tours in Morocco.
Itinerary of the 3 days tour from Marrakech to Fes
The route below is our standard plan for the 3 days tour from Marrakech to Fes. However, we can adjust the stops, the hotels and the camp to your wishes. Driving distances and times are approximate and do not include stops.
Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley
Your driver picks you up at your riad or hotel in Marrakech at around 8:00 am. First, the road climbs into the High Atlas through Berber villages, walnut trees and red terraces. Soon, you reach the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The sign at the top reads 2,260 m, although modern GPS measurements place the pass at about 2,205 m. Either way, the views are wide and the air is fresh.
Next, you descend towards the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified earthen village sits above the Ounila river and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987. A local guide can walk you up through its lanes to the old granary at the top. Moreover, you will recognise its walls from films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.
After lunch, you pass through Ouarzazate, often called the door of the desert and home of the Atlas film studios. Then you follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. On the way, you see the palm grove of Skoura and the town of Kelaat M’Gouna, famous for its rose festival in May. Finally, you reach the Dades Valley for dinner and the night.
- Driving distance: about 350 km
- Driving time: about 6 hours 30 minutes
- Overnight: hotel or guesthouse in the Dades Valley
- Meals: dinner
Day 2: Dades Gorges – Tinghir – Todgha Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga (camel trek)
After breakfast, you drive up the Dades Gorges to see the rock formations known as the Monkey Fingers and the famous hairpin road. Then you continue east to Tinghir. Here, a viewpoint looks over a long green palm grove and old earthen villages.
A few kilometres further, you enter the Todgha Gorge. In its narrowest section, the canyon is only about 10 m wide, and smooth rock walls rise around 160 m on each side. Elsewhere, the cliffs can reach 400 m. You have time to walk along the river and take photos.
In the afternoon, the road crosses desert plains towards Erfoud, a town known for fossils and dates. Afterwards, you pass Rissani, near the ruins of ancient Sijilmassa, and arrive in Merzouga. There, you meet your camels. You ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, which rise up to 150 m, and you watch the sunset from the sand. In the evening, you enjoy a Berber dinner, drums around the fire and a sky full of stars.
- Driving distance: about 320 km
- Driving time: about 5 hours 30 minutes
- Camel ride: about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to the camp
- Overnight: desert camp in Erg Chebbi (standard or luxury)
- Meals: breakfast and dinner
Day 3: Merzouga – Erfoud – Errachidia – Ziz Gorges – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes
Wake up early to see the sunrise over the dunes. Then ride your camel back to Merzouga, or go back by 4×4 on request. After breakfast and a shower, the longest drive of the tour begins.
First, you head north through Erfoud and Errachidia. Soon after, the road follows the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of palm trees and old ksour. You also cross the Ziz Gorges and the Legionnaire’s Tunnel, dug by the French Foreign Legion in 1927–1928. Then you climb over the Tizi n’Talghemt pass (1,907 m) to Midelt, a good lunch stop known for its apples.
In the afternoon, you enter the Middle Atlas. Here, cedar forests near Azrou are home to Barbary macaques, an endangered species, so please do not feed them. Next, you stop in Ifrane, a mountain town at about 1,650 m nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco”. Finally, you arrive in Fes and your driver drops you at your riad or hotel.
- Driving distance: about 470 km
- Driving time: about 7 hours 30 minutes to 8 hours
