Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech – Jemaa el-Fna

Day 3: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Telouet – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate

Today the real journey south begins. The road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains and reaches the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres. Along the way you stop for photos above terraced valleys and villages built from red earth. Next, a side road leads to Telouet Kasbah, the crumbling palace of the Glaoui family, where painted cedar ceilings and zellige tiles survive behind plain mud walls.

In the afternoon you arrive at Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar that has appeared in dozens of films. You cross the riverbed and climb through the alleys to the old granary at the top for a wide view of the palm grove. The day ends in Ouarzazate, home to the famous Atlas Film Studios.

Day 4: Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Rose Valley – Dades Valley

After breakfast you drive east into the Skoura Oasis, a dense palm grove hiding old earthen kasbahs such as Amredil. The irrigation channels here still work exactly as they did centuries ago. Afterwards, the road follows the Rose Valley around Kelaat M’Gouna, where thousands of damask roses are harvested every spring for rose water and cosmetics. Small cooperatives welcome visitors and explain the process.

By late afternoon you reach the Dades Valley, known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. You pass Erfoud and Rissani, and finally the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Day 6: Merzouga – 4×4 desert excursion – nomads – Gnawa music

Wake early for sunrise over the dunes. It is worth the alarm, since the light changes minute by minute and the desert is completely silent. After breakfast, a 4×4 excursion takes you beyond the main dunes: the dry Lake Dayet Srji, the old mining village of Mfis, and the fossil beds that made this region famous among geologists.

You then share mint tea with a nomadic family who still move with their herds, and continue to Khamlia, a village founded by descendants of sub-Saharan communities. Day 7: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou – Fes

You start at the blue gate of Bab Boujloud and continue to the Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and often described as the oldest continuously operating university on earth. The Bou Inania Madrasa shows carved cedar, stucco and zellige at their finest.

Later you look down on the Chouara tanneries from a leather shop terrace, where hides are still treated in stone vats of natural dye. Day 9: Fes – Meknes – Volubilis – Chefchaouen

You leave Fes and drive to Meknes, the smallest of the four imperial cities. The monumental Bab Mansour gate, the royal granaries and the vast walls built by Sultan Moulay Ismail explain why this city was once compared to Versailles. Afterwards, a short drive brings you to Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco. Its mosaics still lie in the open air, exactly where the floors of wealthy houses used to be.

In the afternoon the road climbs into the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen. The first sight of the blue-washed houses against the grey mountain is genuinely surprising. You arrive in time to watch the sunset from the Spanish Mosque above the town.

Day 10: Chefchaouen – Rabat – Casablanca

The morning stays free in the blue city, which is the best time for photographs because the streets are still empty. You can walk up to the Ras El Maa waterfall, visit the kasbah museum, or simply drink coffee in Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Chefchaouen also keeps a strong Andalusian influence, and many locals speak some Spanish, which surprises travellers from Latin America.

Day 11: Casablanca – El Jadida – Essaouira

Then you head south along the coast to El Jadida and its Portuguese cistern, a UNESCO site famous for its reflections. Day 12: Essaouira – Marrakech departure

Enjoy a final morning in the medina of Essaouira. You can watch the boat builders at work in the port, buy thuya wood carvings, or eat grilled sardines straight from the fish market. Around midday you drive back inland through the argan forests, where a women’s cooperative shows how the oil is pressed by hand.

You arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon. Your driver drops you at Menara Airport or at your hotel, depending on your flight.
