The best excursions in Morocco fit a whole country into a single day. You can leave a Marrakech riad after breakfast, walk beside a mountain river before lunch and still be back for dinner on Jemaa el-Fna. However, the choice is huge, the distances are real and not every day trip is worth the drive. This guide sorts the good from the tiring, city by city, with honest 2026 drive times, entry fees and local advice from our team in Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and Tangier.
Quick answer: the most rewarding excursions in Morocco are the Ourika and Imlil valleys, the Ouzoud Waterfalls, the Agafay Desert, Essaouira and Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech; Volubilis and Chefchaouen from Fes; camel treks from Merzouga; Paradise Valley from Agadir; and the Hassan II Mosque on a shore day in Casablanca. Most last 8 to 12 hours and return you to your hotel the same evening.
Your 30-second summary
- An excursion is a short trip that starts and ends at your base, usually on the same day.
- Marrakech is the busiest hub, with six classic day trips between 30 minutes and 4 hours away.
- Shared group trips from Marrakech start at roughly €16 to €35 per person in 2026.
- The Hassan II Mosque tour costs 140 MAD, and Volubilis charges 70 MAD at the gate.
- Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the most comfortable seasons.
- From 20 September 2026, Morocco runs on GMT all year, so check early pickup times.
- Morocco welcomed a record 9.4 million visitors in the first half of 2026, so book popular dates early.
- If a day trip means more than six hours in the car, a two- or three-day tour is usually the better choice.
What is an excursion? A clear definition first
Many travellers search “what does excursion mean” before they book. The answer is simple. An excursion is a short journey taken for pleasure or learning, and it returns you to the place where you started. In travel, however, the word usually means a day trip. Cruise lines call them shore excursions, because you leave the ship and come back before it sails.
A tour is different. It moves you from one base to another over several nights. So a trip from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls and back is an excursion. By contrast, a three-day loop to the Sahara is a tour.
This difference matters when you plan excursions in Morocco. Generally, a day trip is perfect for places within three hours of your hotel. Beyond that, you spend more time in the car than on the ground. In that case, a short tour with one night away is often the smarter choice.
How excursions in Morocco work in 2026
Most excursions in Morocco follow the same rhythm. First, a driver collects you between 7:00 and 9:00. Then you drive to the first stop, enjoy a guided walk or activity, eat lunch in a local restaurant and return in the late afternoon. Longer trips, such as Ait Ben Haddou or Chefchaouen, can finish after 20:00.
Private, shared or self-drive?
You have three main options. First, shared group trips put you in a minibus with 8 to 17 other travellers. They are the cheapest way to travel, but the schedule is fixed. Second, private excursions give you a car, a driver and often a guide for your group only. As a result, you choose the pace, the stops and the lunch spot. Third, you can rent a car and drive yourself. That works on the coast, yet mountain roads and medina parking can be stressful for first-time visitors.
Our full comparison of private vs group tours in Morocco explains the trade-offs in more detail.
What is usually included
- Hotel or riad pickup and drop-off (medina riads often use the nearest square).
- An air-conditioned vehicle and a licensed driver.
- A local guide for walks, although some shared trips hire one on site.
- Bottled water, and sometimes lunch.
Entry fees, camel rides, boat rides and tips are often extra. Therefore, always ask for a written list before you pay.
The clock changes on 20 September 2026
Morocco is leaving its year-round GMT+1 schedule and moves permanently to GMT at 2:00 on 20 September 2026, according to Le360. As a result, sunrise and sunset will appear one hour earlier on your watch than they do in summer. This matters for sunrise camel walks and for flights booked before the change. Our page on what time it is in Morocco now shows the live clock.
Excursions in Morocco from Marrakech
Marrakech is the capital of day trips. Most searches for excursions in Morocco Marrakech lead to the same six places, and each one offers a very different landscape. Here is how they compare, from the shortest drive to the longest.

Agafay Desert: the closest desert feeling
The Agafay Desert is a stony plateau only 30 to 45 minutes from the city. However, it has no tall sand dunes. Instead, it offers bare hills, open skies and a clear view of the snowy High Atlas in winter. Quad bikes, camel rides and sunset dinners in desert camps are also popular here.
This is the best excursion for travellers with half a day to spare. It also suits families, because the drive is short. You can book our Agafay Desert quad bike and camel ride for a morning or an afternoon.
Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma
The Ourika Valley follows a river into the foothills of the High Atlas, roughly 65 km south of Marrakech. On the way, the road passes Berber villages, clay houses and small riverside cafés. At the end, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point for a walk to a series of waterfalls.
The first waterfall is an easy climb. The higher ones need good shoes and a steady step, so a local guide is useful. Also, watch the weather: summer storms can raise the river quickly. See the full plan in our Ourika Valley day trip from Marrakech.
Imlil and the Toubkal National Park
Imlil is a mountain village at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, which rises to 4,167 metres and is the highest peak in North Africa. The drive also takes about an hour and a half, just like Ourika. Once there, you walk through walnut groves and terraced fields to villages such as Aroumd.
Imlil is quieter than Ourika. Consequently, it feels more like a hiking day than a sightseeing trip. Moreover, you can drink mint tea in a family home and see how Amazigh families live in the mountains. Our Imlil Valley day trip from Marrakech includes a local mountain guide. For a deeper look at the range, read our Atlas Mountains Morocco guide.
Ouzoud Waterfalls
The Ouzoud Falls drop a combined 110 metres into the El-Abid river gorge. They sit about 150 km north-east of Marrakech, so plan on 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Olive trees shade the paths, and wild Barbary macaques often appear near the viewpoints.
Then, at the bottom, small boats take you close to the spray for about 10 to 20 MAD per person. A tagine lunch by the water usually costs 40 to 60 MAD. The flow is strongest from March to June, while August is the busiest and driest month. Book our Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip from Marrakech for a full day with a guide.

Essaouira on the Atlantic coast
Essaouira is a whitewashed port town with blue boats, sea walls and a relaxed medina. UNESCO listed its old town in 2001, and you can read why on the UNESCO World Heritage page for Essaouira. The drive from Marrakech takes about three hours, often with a stop at an argan cooperative.
Essaouira is the best choice when the city feels too hot. Indeed, the Atlantic wind keeps it cool, even in July. Also, the fish market sells grilled sardines for a few dirhams. Our Essaouira full-day trip from Marrakech leaves you around five hours in town.

Ait Ben Haddou and the Tizi n’Tichka pass
Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village of earth buildings on the old caravan route to the Sahara. UNESCO inscribed it in 1987, as the official UNESCO listing explains. It has also appeared in many films and series.
The road crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at about 2,260 metres. The views are superb, but the drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours each way. So this is the longest classic day trip from Marrakech. Our Ait Ben Haddou day trip from Marrakech starts early to beat the heat. If you prefer a slower pace, the 2 days tour from Marrakech to Zagora adds a desert night.

Excursions from Fes
Fes is the spiritual heart of the country, and it makes an excellent base for northern excursions in Morocco. The roads are good, the landscapes are green and the history is deep. Here are the three trips we recommend most often.
Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes
Volubilis is the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco, and it is also the easiest to reach. It lies about 75 to 80 km from Fes, roughly an hour and a half by car. UNESCO listed it in 1997, and the UNESCO page for Volubilis describes its olive-oil economy. The site opens daily from 8:00 to 18:00, or 17:00 in winter, and entry costs 70 MAD.
First, look for the Orpheus mosaic, the Labours of Hercules and the triumphal arch. Then drive three kilometres to Moulay Idriss, the holy town where Idris I is buried. Finally, finish in Meknes, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail, with its giant Bab Mansour gate. Together, the three stops fill a perfect day, because none of the drives is long. Read our Fes Morocco guide to plan your time in the medina as well.
Chefchaouen, the blue city
Chefchaouen is about 200 km north of Fes. Because the drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours each way, this is a long day. Still, many visitors think the blue lanes, the kasbah and the Ras El Maa spring are worth it. If you can, sleep one night there instead. Our Chefchaouen Morocco guide explains the best viewpoints and the quietest hours.
Ifrane, Azrou and the cedar forest
Ifrane sits about an hour south of Fes in the Middle Atlas. Its sloping roofs and clean parks earned it the nickname “the Switzerland of Morocco”. Nearby, the Azrou cedar forest is home to Barbary macaques. This excursion is ideal in summer, because the altitude keeps temperatures low. In winter, snow sometimes covers the whole area.

Excursions from Merzouga and the Sahara
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of dunes that rises to about 150 metres. Most visitors, therefore, arrive on a multi-day tour. However, once you are there, several short excursions turn a desert night into a full experience.

Camel trek at sunset or sunrise
The camel trek is the signature desert excursion. It usually lasts one to two hours each way and ends at a camp or a high dune. Sunset is the most popular time. Sunrise, however, is quieter, and the sand is cooler. Remember that the new GMT schedule moves both times one hour earlier on the clock. Read our tips on Merzouga camel trekking before you go.
The 4×4 loop around Erg Chebbi
A half-day 4×4 loop circles the dunes. Typical stops include Khamlia, a village known for Gnawa music, a seasonal lake where flamingos sometimes appear, old mines and a nomad family who serves tea. In addition, you can try sandboarding on the slopes. Overall, this is the best way to see the wider desert in a few hours.
Rissani market and Erfoud fossils
Rissani, north of Merzouga, also holds a traditional market with a donkey “parking” area. Nearby, Erfoud is famous for fossil workshops, where craftsmen cut and polish ancient stone. Both stops, moreover, fit easily into a morning.
Sahara tours and excursions in 2026: when one day is not enough
People often ask whether they can visit the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech. The honest answer is no. Merzouga is roughly 9 to 10 hours away by road. For that reason, the shortest sensible option is our 3 days tour from Marrakech to the desert. From Errachidia, the 3 days desert tour from Errachidia is even shorter on the road. Our Sahara Desert Morocco guide and the Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga comparison will help you pick the right dunes.
Excursions from Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is the gateway to the southern valleys and the capital of Moroccan cinema. It is also the best base for excursions in Morocco’s pre-Sahara, because every major sight is less than two hours away.
Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah
Atlas Studios is one of the largest film studios in the world by area. For example, Gladiator, The Mummy and Kingdom of Heaven used its sets. In 2026, general admission costs about 80 MAD, and it includes a guided tour. After that, visit the Taourirt Kasbah in town, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family.
Skoura and the Valley of Roses
Skoura is a palm grove dotted with old kasbahs, about 40 km east of Ouarzazate. Further on, the Valley of Roses around Kalaat M’Gouna produces rose water and holds a rose festival each May. Meanwhile, Ait Ben Haddou is only about 30 km from Ouarzazate, so you can also visit it without the long mountain drive.
Excursions in Agadir, Morocco
Agadir is a beach city, yet it also offers some of the most relaxed excursions in Morocco. Still, many visitors stay in resorts and never leave the sand. That is a pity, because the Souss region is full of variety.
Paradise Valley and Imouzzer
Paradise Valley is a palm-lined gorge with natural rock pools, roughly an hour’s drive from Agadir. Access to the pools is free, but parking costs about 20 MAD. You do not need an unofficial guide, even if men at the car park insist. Also, wear water shoes, because the rocks are slippery. The pools are fullest from March to June and can be almost dry in late summer. Some trips continue to the Imouzzer waterfalls higher in the hills.
Taroudant, the “little Marrakech”
Next, Taroudant is a walled market town about an hour and a quarter east of Agadir. Its ochre ramparts, calm souks and leather tanneries feel like Marrakech without the crowds. Therefore, it makes a good half-day or full-day trip.
Souss-Massa National Park
Souss-Massa National Park protects coastal dunes, wetlands and one of the last wild colonies of the northern bald ibis. Birdwatchers love it, especially in spring and autumn, when migrating species pass through. Because the park is spread out, a driver who knows the tracks makes the visit much easier.
Tiznit, Essaouira and the coast
South of Agadir, Tiznit is known for its silver jewellery. To the north, surf villages line the coast, and Essaouira is roughly three hours away. As a result, travellers who fly into Agadir can build a whole week of day trips without changing hotels.
Shore excursions in Casablanca, Morocco
Casablanca is Morocco’s main cruise port, and shore excursions in Casablanca, Morocco must fit a tight schedule. Usually, ships dock in an industrial port about 2 to 3 km from the city centre. You cannot walk out freely, so you will need a shuttle, a taxi or a booked excursion.
The Hassan II Mosque
The Hassan II Mosque stands on the ocean close to the port, and its minaret rises about 210 metres. Moreover, it is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. In 2026, the guided tour costs 140 MAD for foreign adults and is free for children under six. Tours run from 9:00 to 16:00, or until 15:00 on Fridays, and last about 40 to 60 minutes. Cover your shoulders and knees; a headscarf is not required.
Casablanca and Rabat in one day
Rabat, the capital, is about 90 minutes north by road. Typically, a combined day includes the Hassan II Mosque, the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum. Trains between the two cities are frequent, and you can check them on the ONCF website. However, a private driver saves time when your ship leaves in the afternoon.
Is Marrakech worth it from the cruise port?
Many passengers ask whether cruise lines have cancelled their Marrakech excursions from Casablanca. Policies change from season to season, so check with your cruise line directly. In any case, the numbers are clear. Marrakech is about three hours away by road, so you get six hours of driving and only three to four hours in the city. If your ship stays until late evening, it can work. Otherwise, Casablanca and Rabat make a far more relaxed day. For a longer stay, look at our tours from Casablanca, such as the 7 days private tour from Casablanca.
Excursions from Tangier
Tangier sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, and it is the natural base for northern day trips. Asilah, a white Atlantic town with murals and Portuguese walls, is only about 45 minutes away. Our Asilah Morocco guide covers it in detail. Similarly, Tetouan, with its UNESCO-listed medina, is about an hour to the south-east. Chefchaouen takes roughly two to two and a half hours, which makes it easier from Tangier than from Fes.
If you arrive by ferry from Spain, these excursions in Morocco are a great first taste of North Africa. Then continue south with our tours from Tangier or the 7 days tour from Tangier.
Sample plans: excursions in Morocco from one base
Many guests prefer to stay in one hotel and explore from there. That approach works well, as long as you mix long and short days. Here are three plans we often suggest, from the shortest to the longest.
Three days in Marrakech
- Day 1: explore the medina in the morning, then enjoy a sunset in the Agafay Desert.
- On day 2, walk in the Ourika Valley or Imlil, and return for dinner.
- Finally, spend day 3 at the Ouzoud Waterfalls or in Essaouira.
Five days between Marrakech and the coast
- Days 1 and 2: Marrakech, with a half day in Agafay.
- On day 3, drive to Essaouira and sleep by the sea.
- Day 4: follow the coast south to Agadir, then visit Paradise Valley.
- Then, on day 5, see Taroudant before your flight home from Agadir.
A week in the north
- Days 1 and 2: Tangier, with an excursion to Asilah.
- On day 3, drive to Chefchaouen and stay the night.
- Days 4 to 6: Fes, with day trips to Volubilis, Meknes and Ifrane.
- Finally, fly home from Fes on day 7, or take the train back north.
These excursions in Morocco are only examples. Therefore, we adjust every plan to your flight times, your pace and the season.
How much do excursions in Morocco cost in 2026?
Of course, prices depend on distance, group size and what the trip includes. The table below shows typical 2026 market ranges and the official fees we checked. In mid-September 2026, one euro is worth about 10.9 to 11 dirhams. Our Morocco currency guide explains how to pay and where to change money.
| Item | Typical 2026 cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared day trip from Marrakech | About €16 to €35 per person | Ourika, Imlil, Ouzoud or Essaouira, lunch usually extra |
| Private day trip with driver | Quoted per vehicle | Better value for families and groups of four or more |
| Hassan II Mosque tour | 140 MAD | Guided tour included, free under six |
| Volubilis entry | 70 MAD | Guides wait at the gate |
| Atlas Studios, Ouarzazate | About 80 MAD | Guided visit included |
| Ouzoud boat ride | 10 to 20 MAD | Per person, short ride |
| Paradise Valley parking | About 20 MAD | Pools are free to visit |
| Tagine lunch in a village | 40 to 60 MAD | Higher in tourist restaurants |
A fair tip for a driver or guide is around 50 to 100 MAD per person for a full day. Of course, it remains your choice.
The best time for excursions in Morocco
Morocco enjoys sunshine for most of the year. Even so, each season changes which excursions in Morocco work best.
| Season | Weather | Best excursions | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Warm days, green valleys | Ouzoud, Paradise Valley, Volubilis, Imlil | Busy Easter weeks |
| Summer (June to August) | Very hot inland | Essaouira, Ifrane, Imlil, early Agafay trips | Heat after 13:00, summer storms in Ourika |
| Autumn (September to November) | Pleasant, clear skies | Ait Ben Haddou, Sahara, Chefchaouen | Earlier sunsets after the GMT change |
| Winter (December to February) | Sunny days, cold nights | Agafay, Casablanca, Essaouira, Merzouga | Snow on Tizi n’Tichka and in Imlil |
For month-by-month details, read our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
How to choose the right excursion for you
The best excursions in Morocco depend less on the place and more on your group. Here is a quick guide.
- Families with young children: Agafay, Ourika or Essaouira. The drives are shorter, and there is space to run around.
- Hikers: Imlil, or a longer walk from Setti Fatma. Ask for a certified mountain guide.
- History lovers: Volubilis and Meknes, or Ait Ben Haddou with a guide who knows the caravan routes.
- Photographers: Chefchaouen at dawn, Essaouira harbour, and the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset.
- Cruise passengers: the Hassan II Mosque with Rabat, rather than a rushed Marrakech day.
- Luxury travellers: private excursions with a guide, a restaurant lunch and flexible timing.
- Food lovers: Essaouira’s fish market, or a cooking lunch in an Atlas village. Our guide to traditional Moroccan dishes tells you what to order.
Private or shared: which excursion style is better?
Shared excursions in Morocco are ideal for solo travellers on a budget. They are also a good way to meet other people. However, they can include long waits at pickup points and fixed shopping stops.
Private excursions, on the other hand, cost more per person for couples. Yet the price gap shrinks quickly for families of four to six. In addition, you choose your start time, which matters in summer and after the GMT change. For this reason, most of our guests choose private trips. You can also ask us to add a stop, change the lunch or skip a shop.
Five common mistakes on excursions in Morocco
- Booking the longest trip on your first day. After a flight, a four-hour drive each way is tiring. So start with a short excursion instead.
- Ignoring the season. Ouzoud and Paradise Valley can disappoint in late summer, when the water drops.
- Choosing the cheapest offer without reading it. After all, a very low price often hides long shopping stops or no guide at all.
- Leaving no margin before a flight or a ship. Mountain roads can close after snow or storms, so keep at least three hours in reserve.
- Carrying only large notes. Village cafés and parking attendants rarely have change for a 200 MAD note.
Avoid these mistakes, and excursions in Morocco become the easiest part of your trip.
Safety, etiquette and what to pack
Morocco is a safe country for day trips, and the main risks are ordinary ones: heat, slippery paths and pushy sellers. Our honest guide Is Morocco safe? covers the details.
Simple etiquette rules
- Always ask before you photograph people, especially in villages.
- Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered in mosques and rural areas.
- Also, use your right hand to eat and to pass food.
- Agree on prices for camel rides and boat trips before you start.
What to pack for a day trip
- Comfortable walking shoes, or water shoes for Paradise Valley and Ourika.
- A light jacket, because the mountains are cooler than the cities.
- Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat.
- Cash in small notes for fees, tips and snacks.
- A charged phone with a local SIM card or eSIM.
Our guide on what to wear in Morocco gives season-by-season advice. For mobile data, see our page on the SIM card in Morocco.
From excursions to a full Morocco tour
Excursions in Morocco are the perfect start. But if you find yourself planning three long drives from the same hotel, a tour usually works better. You sleep closer to the sights, the drives are shorter and you see more in less time.
For example, the 3 days tour from Marrakech to Fes crosses the Atlas, visits Ait Ben Haddou and spends a night in the Sahara on the way. Similarly, the 5 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert adds the gorges at a slower pace. For the complete picture, the 12 days tour from Marrakech links the desert, Fes and Chefchaouen. You can browse every route on our Morocco tours page, all our tours from Marrakech, and our day trips in Morocco archive. Our trip to Morocco planning guide also shows how to combine both styles.
Frequently asked questions about excursions in Morocco
What are the best excursions in Morocco?
The most popular excursions in Morocco are Ouzoud, Ourika, Imlil, Agafay, Essaouira and Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech; Volubilis and Chefchaouen from Fes; and camel treks from Merzouga. The best one for you depends on your base and your interests.
What does excursion mean in travel?
An excursion is a short trip that starts and ends at the same place, usually within one day. Cruise lines call them shore excursions.
Can I visit the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?
Not realistically. Merzouga is about 9 to 10 hours away by road. Instead, choose the Agafay Desert for a half day, or a three-day desert tour for real dunes.
How long is the drive to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours each way from Marrakech. That is because the falls are about 150 km away.
Are excursions in Morocco Marrakech-based only?
No. Fes, Agadir, Casablanca, Tangier, Ouarzazate and Merzouga all offer excellent day trips. Marrakech simply has the widest choice.
What are the best excursions in Agadir, Morocco?
Paradise Valley, Taroudant, Souss-Massa National Park, Tiznit and Essaouira are the top choices from Agadir.
What is the best shore excursion in Casablanca?
For most cruise passengers, the Hassan II Mosque combined with Rabat gives the best balance of sights and time. Marrakech is possible, but you spend about six hours on the road.
How much does the Hassan II Mosque tour cost?
In 2026, the guided tour costs 140 MAD for foreign adults. Children under six enter free.
Do I need a guide for excursions in Morocco?
Not always. However, a licensed guide adds a lot in Volubilis, Ait Ben Haddou and the mountain villages. In Paradise Valley, you can walk without one.
Is it safe to take a day trip in Morocco?
Yes. Day trips are safe, especially with a registered company. The main precautions concern heat, slippery paths and agreeing on prices in advance.
Does the September 2026 time change affect excursion schedules?
Yes. From 20 September 2026, Morocco runs on GMT all year. As a result, sunrise and sunset activities start one hour earlier on the clock than in summer.
Can I combine two excursions in one day?
Yes, but only when the places are close together. For example, Agafay pairs well with a morning in the medina, and Volubilis pairs well with Meknes. By contrast, Ouzoud and Essaouira lie in opposite directions, so keep them for separate days.
Are excursions in Morocco suitable for children?
Yes. Children usually love the camels, the boats at Ouzoud and the beach in Essaouira. Just choose shorter drives, pack snacks and ask for a child seat when you book.
When should I book my excursion?
Book at least a week ahead in spring, autumn and holiday periods. However, for private trips at Christmas or Easter, two to four weeks is safer.
