Private Tour

Our Volubilis day trip from Fes takes you to the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco, then on to the holy town of Moulay Idriss and the imperial city of Meknes, and brings you back to your riad the same evening. It is a private tour: only your group, your own air-conditioned vehicle and a local driver-guide who knows the road from Fes to Volubilis by heart.

In one day you walk the mosaic floors and the Decumanus Maximus of a city the Romans ruled for more than two centuries, see where the first Moroccan dynasty began, and stand under the monumental gate of Moulay Ismail’s capital. Because you do not depend on a bus timetable, we leave early, beat the heat at Volubilis and adapt every stop to your pace.

Quick answers about the Volubilis day trip from Fes

  • How far is Volubilis from Fes? About 80 km, or roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car via Meknes.
  • Is Volubilis worth a day trip from Fes? Yes. It is the largest and best-preserved Roman site in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and the same day covers Moulay Idriss and Meknes.
  • How long do you spend at Volubilis? About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, which is enough to see the main mosaics, the Basilica, the Capitol and the Arch of Caracalla.
  • Can I do it without a tour? Yes, by grand taxi, but you must negotiate each leg. A private day trip from Fes saves that time and gives you a guide on the road.
  • What is not included? Lunch, drinks, entrance fees and tips.

Highlights of the Volubilis day trip from Fes

  • Walking the Roman city of Volubilis, about 42 hectares inside a 2.6 km circuit of walls.
  • Seeing the mosaic floors of the House of Orpheus and the House of the Labours of Hercules where they were laid, in the open air.
  • Standing under the Arch of Caracalla, built in 217 AD in honour of the emperor and his mother Julia Domna.
  • Following the Decumanus Maximus, the main street, past the Basilica and the Capitoline Temple.
  • Spotting the olive presses: archaeologists have found 58 oil-pressing complexes, proof of the wealth of the city.
  • Looking down on Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the hill town around the tomb of Idris I, founder of the first Moroccan dynasty.
  • Passing through Bab Mansour in Meknes, the great gate finished in 1732 and decorated with green zellige.
  • Visiting the courtyard of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the Place el-Hedim.
  • Coming back to Fes the same evening, with time for dinner in the medina.

Why book a private Volubilis tour from Fes?

Volubilis has almost no shade, so the hour you arrive changes the whole visit. On a private tour we leave Fes at 8:00 am and reach the ruins before the tour buses and before the midday sun, which is also when the light on the columns is best for photos.

A private Volubilis day trip from Fes also lets you choose the order. Some travellers want lunch in Moulay Idriss, others prefer more time in the Meknes medina, and families often shorten the walk at the ruins. Your driver-guide changes the plan on the road, without extra cost. If you are still choosing a format, read our guide to private vs group tours in Morocco.

Itinerary of the Volubilis day trip from Fes

The plan below is our standard route. Driving times are approximate and do not include stops.

8:00 am: pick-up in Fes

Your driver-guide meets you at your riad or hotel in Fes. If your riad is deep in the medina, we meet you at the nearest gate, such as Bab Boujloud or Bab Ftouh, and help with the walk. Then we take the motorway west towards Meknes and turn north into the olive country of the Zerhoun massif.

9:15 am: Volubilis, the Roman city

Volubilis began as a Berber settlement around the 3rd century BC. Rome annexed the region in AD 44, and the city grew rich on olive oil and grain until Rome withdrew from the area around AD 285. Earthquakes and the builders of Meknes, who took marble for Moulay Ismail’s palaces, did the rest of the damage, yet the plan of the city is still easy to read.

With a licensed site guide, you walk from the olive presses to the House of Orpheus, the Baths, the Forum, the Basilica and the Capitoline Temple, then up the Decumanus Maximus to the Arch of Caracalla and the Tangier Gate. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours.

11:30 am: Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

About 4 km from the ruins, the white town of Moulay Idriss covers two hills above the valley. Idris I arrived here in 788, and the Idrisid dynasty he founded is considered the first Moroccan state. His mausoleum is closed to non-Muslims, but you can walk the lanes, see the cylindrical minaret and take in the view from the terrace above the town. It is also a good place for lunch.

1:30 pm: Meknes, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail

Meknes is about 30 km from Volubilis. Sultan Moulay Ismail, who reigned from 1672 to 1727, made it his capital and surrounded it with kilometres of walls. You see Bab Mansour and Place el-Hedim, visit the courtyard of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and, time permitting, the royal granaries and stables of Heri es-Souani. Then you have free time in the Meknes medina, which is calmer than the one in Fes.

5:00 pm: return to Fes

The drive back to Fes takes about 50 minutes on the motorway. We drop you at your riad or hotel in the late afternoon.

What makes Volubilis different from other Roman sites

Mosaics left where they were found

In most Roman cities the best floors are in a museum. At Volubilis many mosaics still lie in the houses that commissioned them, so you see Orpheus, Bacchus and the Labours of Hercules in their own rooms.

A city of olive oil

The 58 oil-pressing complexes found so far show what paid for the marble and the mosaics. The same olive groves still surround the site today, and you drive through them on the way from Fes.

The link between Rome and Moroccan history

Volubilis did not end with Rome. Latin-speaking Christians still lived here in the 7th century, and Idris I was welcomed by the local Awraba tribe before he founded his capital, later continued in Fes. That is why this day trip from Fes connects so naturally with the city you sleep in.

Favorites Morocco Tours vs other Fes day trip companies

Many Volubilis tours from Fes are shared minibus trips that reach the ruins at noon and stop in two shops on the way. Ours is private, leaves early and has no compulsory shopping stops. We also tell you honestly how long each stop needs, so you never pay for a day that feels rushed.

Besides that, we are a local Moroccan team and we run longer routes from Fes every week, so the same driver-guides can continue with you to the Sahara on a 3 days tour from Fes to Merzouga or a 4 days desert tour from Fes to Marrakech.

Know before you go

  • Volubilis is an open site with very little shade. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, especially from May to September.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the paving stones and the paths between the houses are uneven.
  • Spring (March to May) is the most beautiful season, with green fields and wild flowers around the ruins. Autumn is also pleasant; see the best time to visit Morocco.
  • The shrine of Moulay Idriss and the mosques of Meknes are closed to non-Muslims. Dress modestly in Moulay Idriss; see what to wear in Morocco.
  • Bring some cash in dirhams for entrance fees and lunch; see our guide to the Moroccan dirham.
  • Opening hours and entrance fees can change, so we confirm them the day before your trip.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Volubilis from Fes?

Volubilis is about 80 km from Fes, which takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car via the motorway to Meknes and the road north to Moulay Idriss.

Is a day trip from Fes to Volubilis worth it?

Yes. Volubilis is the most complete Roman city in Morocco, its mosaics are still in place, and the same day covers Moulay Idriss and Meknes, two places that are hard to combine by public transport.

How long should I spend at Volubilis?

Between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours is enough for the main monuments. Photographers and history lovers can stay longer, because the tour is private.

Can I visit Volubilis and Meknes in one day from Fes?

Yes, that is exactly this route. Volubilis is about 30 km from Meknes, and Meknes is about 60 km from Fes, so the whole loop is around 170 km.

Can we add Chefchaouen to the same day?

We do not recommend it. Chefchaouen is about 200 km from Fes in another direction, so it deserves its own day trip. We can organise both on consecutive days.

Is the Volubilis day trip from Fes suitable for children?

Yes. Children usually love the mosaics and the open space of the ruins. Tell us their ages and we bring child seats and adjust the pace.

Can you pick us up inside the Fes medina?

Cars cannot enter the old medina, so we meet you at the nearest gate and walk with you to the vehicle.

Can the tour start from Meknes instead of Fes?

Yes. We pick you up in Meknes and visit Volubilis and Moulay Idriss, then drop you in Meknes or in Fes.

How do I pay?

We accept payment by PayPal, and we explain the details when you confirm your booking.
